Songwriting is not only for music enthusiasts. Anyone can write a song provided you have the basic knowledge of an instrument, notes of a chord, a concept, and the proper writing skill. The truth is that everyone may be a good musician, but not everyone has a creative idea for writing a track. Being a composer is a plus factor and an advantage to be a great entertainer today.
But did you know that even starters can write a song? Of course, you can if you want to, even if you did not go to a music school or own a music studio.
There are many ways to start making music. To start with …
What does it take to be a good songwriter?
The first step in composing a hit track is to understand the flow of the song itself. It is essential to consider the song’s underlying content, the message, and its impact on the listener. Thus, it is possible to do this by converting small pieces of music and learning to modify and integrate them exactly.
What motivates you to write a song?
In my hometown, I had the opportunity to meet a singer/composer. I took advantage of asking him a few questions about songwriting. And his responses motivated me to pursue my passion for composing a hit track.
Here are the goals he shared to writing a piece of music:
- To write a song that describes yourself and your feelings in a manner that others can appreciate.
- To write a song according to your interests. You may be a sporty type, foody reader, etc.
- To write a song, you must first understand how music works in your life.
- To write a song to prove your ability as well as to inspire others.
You could think of it like Ed Sheeran wrote his hit pop track love songs for his future wife. Or how Taylor Swift changes her music from being a country princess to the confident woman she is now.
Another artist that is a perfect example is Tatiana Blades’ the Collektives band. If you listen to their first hit track, “Letting Go,” you’ll remember the good old days where music is not too loud and full of content in it.
The step-by-step songwriting guide for starters:
Have you got melodies in your mind, or the lyrics keep coming into your head? Have you started constructing a music bar? Perhaps it’s time to sit down and start making a song.
1) Prepare your songwriting tools
Grab a pencil, a piece of paper, and your favorite instrument. I don’t say play all of the musical instruments right away. Choosing one is an excellent way to start.
2) Start with your background knowledge
Yes, it takes time to learn to write songs. There is still a lot to learn about it, but that’s fine. Just go with the flow. Start with everything you’ve learned about music up to this point. Starting with small skills increases the overall flow of the process.
3) Focus on a specific idea
Putting up lyrics can be challenging at times. Focus on the message you want to convey in the song. Have a clear goal and topic in mind, and the harmony, melody, and rhythm will fall into place. What feels good for you is the perfect way to write lyrics.
4) Know the song’s structures
The verse, chorus, and bridge are the three main components. Aside from that, you can look into the following song structures:
- Song melody
- The key-chord
- The hook
- The arrangement
There you have it, the basics of songwriting. Begin writing your song. You never know, one day, the whole world will hear you.
