Received a text message from 206-582-7746 with a scammer saying they were Anna, a 32 year old project manager who works in finance and energy field. This is normally how the pig butchering scam starts.
How scammers initiate contact
A random text message is received with a casual start, “Hello is this (your name)”. Sometimes they will send you a picture, sometimes they will say they thought you were someone else. But somehow these scammers will want to start a conversation. They will ask about you, and entice you with romance or imagination.
Somewhere along the line these criminals will start a conversation. Their goal is to earn your trust and steal your money. NO, you are not the luckiest guy in the world who just scored with a beautiful girl over text message, and NO they can’t help you invest or turn a few thousands into millions. It’s a scam, these are criminals who do this every day, and know what they are doing.
This particular scammer sent a text message in attempts to initiate her pig butchering scam, but they can initiate contact on e-mail, or social networks as well. Any which way they can make contact, they will attempt.
Just to be clear, it’s not always a women contacting a man, it could go either ways. Women are also victims to this scam as well. for many women, the scammer initiates contact through a social profile or dating profile.
What is the Pig Butchering Scam
It’s called the pig butchering scam because its much like fattening up a pig before slaughter it. This us much what the criminal will do, fatten up with the victim before taking all their money.
Often the scammer will work to earn your trust, and talk about how they make money stock trading, cryto trading or other huge financial gains from a platform. With the trust comes the invitation to join this exclusive method of making great financial gains, maybe with some romance future attached to it.
Often the scammer will have a platform or app where you can send money, and it will even show some profits. The platform or app is fake, and the money will all disappear once they think they have received as much money as they could from you, or you raised ay red flags for them to cease communications.
Bottom line
Ignore random text messages, Don’t send money to anyone on hopes of unrealistic returns. Most important, talk to your elderly family members on a regular basis about these scam, as they are target often.
